Comparing Vaporisers, Humidifiers & Diffusers

Coughs, dry tickly throats, congestion and colds can disrupt a baby's sleep. A humidifier can be used to increase air moisture for easier breathing as part of your wellness kit. Vaporisers & humidifiers are commonly used for dry coughs, colds, congestion, dry, scratchy throats & dry, itchy skin. We've refined our range over time so you can pick from the best selection available. Vaporisers, diffusers and humidifiers each offer a different way to increase moisture or add aroma to the air. So, depending on your needs, you may find one particular method more suitable than another.

In most instances, a cool mist humidifier is the solution that our customers choose, rather than a device that adds an aroma to the room because essential oils are not recommended for young babies. But in certain situations a vaporiser or diffuser may be more appropriate. So what is the difference?

Is a Cool Mist Humidifier Different to a Vaporiser and are they safe for newborn babies?

Is a Cool Mist Humidifier Different to a Vaporiser? Absolutely. These Crane models, or cool mist humidifiers, are completely safe, they just turn water into mist, which adds moisture to the air. A steam vaporiser is boiling the water and turning it into steam, so steam gives risk of burns, whereas cool mist is perfectly safe and can be used around children with no risk at all. Can humidifiers be used safely for newborns? Absolutely. Because it's just water that's being turned into cool mist, it's safe for all human beings from newborn up to elderly people who will find, at times, a humidifier useful and completely safe. The only thing you do need to pay attention to with babies or small children is if you're adding essential oils. Some essentials oils are totally unsafe and unsuitable for newborns and small children so consult a specialist aromatherapist. We do have information on our website about which oils are safe at which age. Learn more about humidifiers

What is a Humidifier and What Does it Do?

A humidifier is a device that increases air moisture for easier breathing and a good night’s sleep. If you are using a heater, heat pump or air conditioner in your home the air can become very dry. Dry air can irritate the nose, throat and skin and can lead to tickly coughs and nose bleeds. An ultrasonic humidifier creates a cool mist from water by using high-frequency sound waves. The NZ Ministry of Health recommends using a humidifier to increase moisture in the air as a form of self-care when you have a cold.

Cool mist humidifiers don't contain any heating elements, which means that there's no risk of burns. They're more energy efficient than vaporisers that use heat to disperse vapour. From the feedback we've received, the cool mist from an ultrasonic humidifier tends to produce less condensation than a traditional vaporiser.

Coughs, dry tickly throats, congestion and colds can disrupt a baby's sleep. A Crane humidifier can be used to increase air moisture for easier breathing as part of your wellness kit. If you or your little one has asthma then consult with your doctor for alternatives to a humidifier.

What is a Vaporiser?

A vaporiser creates vapour by heating a liquid or oil-infused pad. They are typically used with an essential oil blend and create an aroma dispersed through a warm watery vapour. Traditional vaporisers are often associated with condensation as the warm vapour condenses when it hits a cool surface like a window. Because vaporisers heat the water, they are also unsafe for babies and toddlers due to the burn risk. A Cool Mist humidifier is safer because it uses ultrasonic vibrations to create a cool mist, with no burn risk.

What is a Diffuser?

You can mix essential oils with a small amount of liquid and use in a diffuser to create an aroma. Diffusers have a smaller capacity tank and don't put out enough moisture to offer the same benefits as a humidifier. They use the ultrasonic mist as a way to disperse the aroma of an essential oil that is added to the tank with water and often have additional features such as a built-in night light or ioniser.

To get the most out of your vaporiser, diffuser or humidifier consider how you might use it. You may have different needs for other members of the family or perhaps you'd like to use it to scent a room with essentials oils other than decongestants.

Why should I use a Ultrasonic Humidifier?

The real question is why shouldn’t you? Humidifiers add essential moisture to indoor air. When heating your home or using air conditioning, the air can become dry. The NZ Ministry of Health recommends using a humidifier to increase moisture in the air as a form of self-care when you have a cold. Include a Crane ultrasonic cool mist humidifier in your family’s cough and cold kit. Safe for newborn babies, adults and everyone in between, a humidifier increases air moisture for easier breathing and a good night’s sleep. Even if you’re feeling great, our Crane Humidifiers are must-haves. From smooth skin to shiny hair to cared-for furniture, they keep you and your home looking beautiful and feeling comfortable.

Why use a humidifier? Louise at The Sleep Store explains

In New Zealand the Ministry of Health recommends you use a humidifier as a form of self-care when you have a cold. Humidifiers add extra moisture to the air and are used with dry coughs, colds, congestion, itchy eyes and even dry skin. Adding extra moisture to the room can make for easier evening and a good night sleep. Read more about humidifiers

Ultrasonic Humidifier or Vaporiser?

Humidifier is the name in the US for what is usually called a Vaporiser in New Zealand and Australia. It is important to note that Crane Humidifier models (Droplet, Drop 4-in-1, Mini Adorable, Personal, 3 in 1 and Personal Humidifier and Aroma Diffuser) are cool mist Ultrasonic Vaporisers, not to be confused with warm mist or steam vaporisers.

Which is Better: A Warm Mist or Cool Mist Humidifier?

The major difference is that a Warm Mist Humidifier is heating the water to produce steam vapour. Cool Mist Humidifiers use an Ultrasonic Nebuliser that vibrates at a very high frequency to produce an extra fine water mist. When it comes to humidifying a room, there is not much of a difference between the two types - both are equally effective. Cool Mist Humidifiers do not have a heating element, so are safer for babies and children because there is no heating element, which could be a safety risk. Cool Mist Humidifiers can also save money on energy costs.

Will a humidifier still work if I have a home ventilation (HRV) system?

Absolutely. A home ventilation (HRV) system will dry out the air in your home. So if your family has colds, dry skin, dry throats etc then adding cool mist can definitely be useful for you.

Will a humidifier work if you have a home ventilation system?

Is the size of the water tank it uses important?

Yes, if you want the humidifier to keep working all night without having to refill it. The larger the tank, the longer the humidifier will keep producing cool mist vapour between refills. The Crane Drop humidifiers can run up to 24 hours on a single 3.8L tank of water. The smaller 1.9L Droplet runs for up to 15 hours. The Personal humidifier & aroma diffuser has a much smaller 0.75L tank and runs for almost 8 hours. The Crane 3 in 1, Drop & Droplet humidifiers also output a greater volume of cool mist vapour which makes them suited to small and large rooms.

Can I use Essential Oils with my Crane Vaporiser?

You can only use essential oils with select Crane models, including the personal Humidifier & Aroma Diffuser, the 3 in 1 Cool Mist Humidifier and the Cool Mist Humidifier & Aroma Diffuser. Essential oils cannot be used with any other Crane models. It is the cool mist produced by water alone in the Crane Humidifiers that can be used for dry coughs, nasal congestion, itchy, scratchy throats and croup. Using oils is not required for the Crane humidifier to be effective and not recommended because over time, oils will degrade the plastic and interfere with the operation of the ultrasonic membrane. For this reason we recommend that oils NOT be used with Crane humidifiers. A glass or ceramic diffuser is more suited for use with oils.

Some Crane models have a vapour pad tray which allows you to add some drops of essential oils onto a vapour pad (rather than in the tank).

Do you have to use essential oils with a humidifier?

Join Lou from The Sleep Store as she answers common Crane Humidifier questions. Question 1: Do you have to use essential oils with a humidifier? Absolutely not. The benefits of using a humidifier come from the cool mist and you absolutely don't need to add any essential oils. Some people choose to for the smell, but the benefits you get for the coughs, colds, congestion etc, come just from the cool mist. Can newborn babies use an ultrasonic humidifier?

Newborns are Obligate Nasal Breathers, meaning that they can only breathe in through their nose for the first 4-6 months of their lives. Their nostrils are so small that even the tiniest clog can make everything from feeding to sleeping difficult and frustrating. Perhaps more importantly, the American Academy of Pediatrics advises against using over the counter cold medication for children under the age of 6. Many parents choose to include a Crane ultrasonic humidifier as part of their winter wellness kit. The cool mist increases the moisture in the air and can be used for dry coughs, colds, dry tickly throats and nasal congestion.

What’s the best way to clean my Crane Humidifier?

It’s simple. Regular cleaning will keep your humidifier running smoother, for longer. We highly recommend emptying the water tank and basin after each use and disinfecting them at least once a week with water and a few capfuls of white vinegar. Please check the manual for further instructions.

Where should I place the humidifier to be effective?

The humidifier should be placed at least 2 feet off the ground because the mist needs to go up and circulate around the room. Place the cool mist humidifier on a firm, flat surface, not directly on a wood surface dresser because you may get spills or extra water on the surface which may damage the wooden surface. Always use it on a base such as a plate or a tray. And in terms of where in the bedroom to place a humidifier. You want to place it where the mist will go easily go up and out over the person who is sick. Don't place it too close to the wall. Even though it won't cause condensation like a steam vaporiser does, you still want it away from the wall and so the mist goes up and circulates around the room.

Do I need a filter to run my Crane Drop, Droplet Adorable or Mini Adorable Humidifier?

Nope. We’re all about simple, clean design, so our humidifiers work perfectly without a filter. One might be necessary if you notice a fine white dust collecting near your Adorable. If so, you can also switch to distilled water to lower the dust-building mineral content. Crane Demineralization Filters remove excess minerals, reducing the white dust so your air (and your home) stays clean.

Crane Ultrasonic Humidifier

Humidifiers, like our range from Crane, add moisture to the air and can be used for congestion, colds, dry, scratchy throats, dry skin and eyes and irritated sinuses. Perfect for babies, adults, and everyone in between, a humidifier increases air moisture for easier breathing and a good night’s sleep. And we know that when it comes down to your family’s health, you’re all about breathing easy!

Crane humidifiers come in a range of shapes and a larger than average tank capacity. This allows the machine to operate for longer without being refilled. You can rest easy knowing that the machine isn't going to run out of vapour halfway through the night. When they finally do run out of water they have an auto-off function.

The vapour they emit is easily adjustable, so you can find the right balance for your room.

Crane Cool Mist Humidifier & Aroma Diffuser

The Crane Cool Mist Humidifier & Aroma Diffuser is designed to be used with Essential Oils to add an aroma to the air as well as an ultrasonic humidifier that generates a cool mist water vapour to add moisture to the air.

The Crane Diffuser uses a specially designed ultrasonic membrane to diffuse the scents or oils that are placed in it rather than heating them as traditional diffusers do. It also lights up in a range of colours that it can cycle through or if you have a colour you prefer from the range available you can select that too.

The Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier and Aroma Diffuser can be used by parents who's children have croup, colds and congestion, as it increases the moisture in the air to make breathing easier. A Crane Humidifier can be used with persistent dry coughs and congestion from newborn babies right through to toddlers and adults. Please note we don't recommend using essentials oils for babies under 3 months of age.
