Brand Information
Wool Mother Maternity
Wool Mother Maternity was founded in 2017 by Alice, right here in New Zealand. Alice’s mother, Julie, is the ultimate wool mother, so it comes as no surprise that Wool Mother Maternity was born while holidaying at her mother's home in Central Hawkes Bay, NZ. Julie’s home is a little two-bedroom cottage, but an absolute treasure trove of felted artwork, cushions, blankets and everything in between. She is a gloriously creative soul with a love of natural fibre. While Alice was visiting with her then infant son, Thomas, he came down sick - forcing him off his food and the breast. Wreaking havoc on her supply, Alice was left in urgent need of some nursing pads and a pump - both of which were left behind at home in Auckland. She had been in the habit of not using any nursing pads, as her supply was fairly predictable, but she found herself in a time of need away from home. The combination of her mother's collection of felted Merino wool and a bit of kiwi ingenuity saved the day. Alice got to work cutting circles from the felted wool, and lo-and-behold, the 'wonder fibre' was definitely wondrous! The felted circles did an incredible job of absorbing the excess milk and keeping her breasts dry and odour-free. This all-too-typical mum-emergency sparked an idea, and those first round circles of felt were later developed further into what it is today - luxurious merino wool felted nursing pads. As time went by Alice had her second baby, Alexander, and Julie had been quietly making the OverNaps for a friend and her baby down in the Hawkes Bay, she absolutely loved them and kept coming back for the next size up! So they thought “Hey, how about we make these for more people to enjoy!” So Julie sent some up for her grandchildren in Auckland and the Wool Mother OverNaps developed from there. Wool Mother use 100% New Zealand Merino wool sourced from a lovely local farm, where the sheep are friends, not food. When sourcing wool, it was of utmost importance to both Alice and Julie to remain conscious of from where the wool is coming from. Alice coined the name Wool Mother Maternity in homage to her mother who loves all things wool and all things felt.
