No 4 - How can I get my catnapper to sleep longer?
Some babies need less sleep in the day! If your baby wakes happy and can last fine until their next sleep time, don't stress yourself trying to make your baby sleep longer as some sleep book told you your baby should sleep for a certain amount of time!
But if your baby is grizzly and not getting enough sleep, here's our top tips for catnappers:
- Play LOUD white noise on repeat. It needs to be louder than a vacuum cleaner for it to be effective.
- Swaddle your baby, even if you don't swaddle at night.
- Use a structured routine for babies over 4-5 months, so they are up long enough to need a longer sleep. For example if a 6 month old is only awake for 1 hour, they will only need a catnap.
- Use the 'wake to sleep' technique for at least a week, where you gently prod your baby until they stir 5 mins before they usually wake - this aims to resettle your baby into another sleep cycle.
- Use a dummy to resettle.
- Use a sling or the buggy to resettle for another sleep cycle, rather than getting baby up and feeding them immediately. This can work as a temporary solution to teach your baby's body clock to need more sleep!
- Use a sleep training technique such as verbal reassurance to teach your baby to self settle into another sleep cycle.
