The Sleep Store Clothing & Sleepwear Guide - What to Dress Baby in at Night

The Sleep Store Clothing & Sleepwear Guide - What to Dress Baby in at Night

Dressing your baby for bed can be a challenge, especially in when temperatures fluctuate overnight during Spring and Autumn. Read on for guidance on how to dress your baby for bed based on the temperature of their nursery and the tog rating of their sleeping bag.

Whilst, the temperature guides below have been designed to assist you in dressing your baby for bed, they are a guide only and you should monitor the temperature of your baby. If your baby feels cold to the touch, add a layer. If your baby feels hot to the touch or they are red and sweaty, remove a layer.

What do the different Tog Ratings mean?

A Tog Rating measures the thermal efficiency (warmth & insulation) in fabric used for bedding and sleepwear. The higher the tog rating, the warmer the fabric. A 3.0 tog-rated sleeping bag or suit is a warm style, suitable for winter and room temperatures of around 16 - 20 degrees Celcius. A 0.2 tog-rated sleeping bag or suit is a lightweight style, suitable for summer with room temperatures of approximately 22 - 26+ degrees Celcius.

What does tog rating mean? Lou at The Sleep Store explains

If you're looking for baby sleeping bags, sleeping suits or swaddles, you will often find the garment is Tog Rated. But what does Tog Rating mean? Tog stands for Thermal Overall Grade. It's a measure of how well a fabric insulates, so the higher the tog rating, the warmer or more insulating the fabric is. TOG ratings are usually applied to Cotton or man-mad fabrics. Merino garments are not TOG rated. 1.0 tog is about equivalent to one light blanket. So for Summer, you're looking for a really low tog of 0.1 - 0.5 tog. And this would be suitable for nursery temperatures of approximately 22-26 degrees Celsuis and above. For the mid-season or cooler summer nights, where the room temperature is between approximately 20-25 degrees Celsius, a 1.0 tog is ideal. As the temperature drops below 20 degrees Celsius, you're looking for at least a 2.5 tog, 3.0 or 3.5 tog rated sleeping bag or suit. Remember, always keep an eye on your baby's temperature to ensure they are warm enough and to prevent overheating. How does Tog Rated sleepwear compare to Merino Sleepwear?

Merino & tog rated sleepwear perform quite differently to each other, so you can't really compare the two. A Tog rating measures the thermal efficiency of fabric and is applied to fabrics which perform consistently (such as cotton or synthetic fibres). However, the natural fibres of merino sleepwear perform differently from other fabrics as they create an air pocket around the wearer, meaning it's more temperature regulating. Because of these natural qualities, merino sleepwear can usually be used in a wider temperature range than tog-rated sleeping bags & suits as it is adaptive to the environment and the wearer. Either fabric type is equally as good and it's personal preference which fabric you use.

Use the chart below to consider what tog-rated or Merino sleeping bag will be the best option based on the temperature of your child's room.

Note: Babies warmth needs vary from child to child just as they do for adults so use as a guide and adjust to suit your baby accordingly. Check your baby regularly to ensure they do not overheat or are waking up from being too cold. The optimal room temperature is around 18 degrees Celsius.
