Top tips for keeping baby cool in summer
Keep baby cool and comfortable for a restful & comfortable night's sleep. Join Annette, Sleep Consultant at The Sleep Store as she shares her top tips for keeping your baby cool during summer. 1. Check what you're dressing your baby in and layer accordingly. A 0.1 Tog, lightweight sleeping bag is a good choice for day sleeps when the temperature is likely higher. 2. Keep the nursery curtains closed during the day to keep the sun out. 3. Keep the windows open during the day to allow good airflow. 4. Try a cool (not cold) bath or shower in the evening to lower their temperature just enough for sleep. 5. Try the icy fan hack using a frozen water bottle and fan to circulate cool air.

Opening the nursery windows first thing in the morning and in the evening before bed will let cooler air in and help to lower the temperature. Keep windows (and doors) on the shady side of the house open during the day to let the breeze in. If you have sash windows, you can lower the top window to let the heat out (hot air rises) and have the lower window open to let the cooler air in.
Blocking out the sun can stop the room heating up as much during the day. 100% blackout blinds are best for this to block all the sunlight out. Then open the windows just before bed to let the fresh air in.
Keeping bedroom doors open at night will help air circulate through the house and ensure rooms aren’t so stuffy.
Create your own air conditioning on a budget by placing a bowl of ice (or frozen water bottles) in front of a fan. The fan will blow on the ice and create colder air - DIY aircon!
Ensure the water is well clear of the electricity and that all is well away from your child's reach.
Use a fan to help circulate air around the room - just make sure you face it to a wall / door and not your baby! It’s also recommended to place the fan by the window, so it draws in the cooler night air to lower the nursery temperature.
Babies can’t tell us if they’re too hot, so it’s important to check their temperature regularly. You may notice that your baby is sweaty, has damp hair or looks very red. You can further check your baby’s temperature by feeling their chest or the back of their neck. If bubs’ looks or feels excessively hot or sweaty, then your baby is too hot and you should remove a layer. You may also notice your baby has become lethargic or restless if they are too hot. As always, please seek advice from a medical professional if you’re worried that your baby is dehydrated or overheating.
How to cool your nursery - summer fan hack
Keeping your baby's nursery cool enough to sleep comfortably in summer can be a challenge. Watch Annette, Sleep Consultant from The Sleep Store demonstrate the summer fan hack of using a frozen water bottle placed in front of a fan to cool your baby's nursery. Ensure the fan isn't facing the baby directly and always place the frozen bottle on a tray to catch the drips.
